1. About these terms

These terms of use ("terms") are an agreement between you and LETC Institute Ltd. ("LETC," "we," "us," or "our"), an Ontario-based educational company that teaches math, science and art to students in grades 3 to 12 through live, instructor-led classes that use coding as a learning tool.

They apply to:

  • our website, letcinstitute.ca
  • our student learning platform, learn.letcinstitute.ca
  • our live online classes and the programs we deliver, including through schools and other partner organizations

By using the website or the learning platform, or by enrolling a student in a program, you agree to these terms. A parent or guardian enrols every student under 18 and agrees to these terms on the student's behalf. If you do not agree, please do not use our services.

2. Terms in plain words for students

This part is for you, the student.

  • Come to class ready to learn, and be kind to your instructor and to the other students.
  • Keep your username and password to yourself. Do not share them, even with friends.
  • Use the learning platform and the class chat for learning only.
  • Your projects belong to you. Your instructors can see them so they can help you.
  • If something does not feel right, or you are not sure what to do, tell your parent or guardian or your instructor.

The rest of these terms are written for parents, guardians and partner organizations.

3. Our programs

Every LETC class is live and online and taught by an instructor in real time. We offer private lessons, small groups and full classes in Mathematics, Science and Art for Grades 3–12. Each program is built on the Ontario curriculum for its subject and focuses on selected expectations for the student's grade. There are no pre-recorded lessons.

  • We place each student by reviewing their grade, learning goals and readiness. We may suggest a short placement assessment when it would help us choose the right level.
  • Program length and class times are set with each family or partner organization and confirmed before the program begins.
  • We may change an instructor or a class time when we need to. We will tell you as early as we can.

Our programs support learning. They are not a replacement for a student's school, and we do not promise any particular grade, mark or admission result.

4. What students need

To join a class, a student needs a laptop or desktop computer with a keyboard and an internet connection. Tablets and phones are not suitable, because students use the keyboard to complete activities and projects during lessons.

Students use our learning platform as part of their live classes. There is no software to buy. You are responsible for your own equipment, your internet connection and any costs your internet provider charges.

5. Accounts and the learning platform

LETC creates each student's account on learn.letcinstitute.ca with a name and username. A parent's or guardian's email can be added so they can sign in and see their child's work and progress.

  • Keep sign-in details private and tell us right away if you think someone else has used an account.
  • Only the student, their parent or guardian, and (for students enrolled through a partner) the partner organization may use a student's account.
  • If no one signs in to a student's account for 12 months, we switch it off automatically. The student's work is kept and we can switch the account back on.
  • You can ask us to close or delete an account at any time by emailing info@letcinstitute.ca.

How we handle personal information is set out in our Privacy Policy.

6. Attendance and missed classes

We ask students to join each class on time.

  • Group classes: lessons are not repeated. If a student misses a class, the instructor will help them catch up at the next class.
  • Private lessons: a private lesson can be rescheduled with at least 48 hours' notice. Please email us as early as you can.
  • Classes are held on the schedule confirmed with you. If we need to cancel a class, we will tell you and offer another time.

7. Fees and payment

Pricing depends on the program and format. We go over it with you when we recommend a program, and we confirm the fees and billing schedule in writing before the program begins.

  • We send invoices to the parent or guardian on file. Invoices are paid by Interac e-Transfer, cheque, or another method we agree with you in writing.
  • For programs delivered through a partner organization, the fees and payment terms in our agreement with that partner apply.
  • Please contact us as soon as you can if you have a question about an invoice or cannot pay on time.

8. Conduct and acceptable use

We want every class to be a safe and welcoming place to learn. You agree that you, and any student you enrol, will not:

  • harass, bully, threaten or discriminate against any instructor, student or staff member
  • share a student's login, or sign in to someone else's account
  • post or share anything unlawful, harmful, hateful or inappropriate in class, in the class chat or on the learning platform
  • try to break, overload or gain unauthorized access to our website, platform or systems, or interfere with other people's use of them
  • use our services to send spam or to advertise
  • copy, scrape or resell our website, platform or teaching materials

Instructors may mute or remove a student from a class, or remove content, when this is needed to keep the class safe or on track. LETC's administrator can read platform chats to support learning and keep students safe, as described in our Privacy Policy.

9. Recording classes

LETC does not record classes unless a parent or partner organization asks and every family in the class agrees, as set out in our Privacy Policy.

To protect other students, please do not record, screenshot or share any live class, or any part of it, yourself. Cameras are optional, and we ask students to use only their first name as their display name.

10. Student work and our materials

Student work. Students own the code, projects and other work they create in our classes. They give LETC permission to store it and show it to their instructors, parents or guardians and, for students enrolled through a partner, the partner organization, so we can teach, assess and report on their learning. We will never use a student's name, image, voice or work in marketing or testimonials, or share it publicly, without a parent's written opt-in and the student's own agreement.

Our materials. LETC owns, or has permission to use, our website, learning platform, course outlines, lesson materials, logos and other content. We give you a personal, non-transferable permission to use them for the student's own learning. You may not copy, share, sell or publish them without our written permission.

11. Assessment and progress reports

Instructors assess students on the subject through observation during class, students explaining their work and a culminating project.

Families receive a short progress report at the end of each program, and every 10 weeks in longer programs. For students enrolled through a partner organization, we send the reports to the partner, which shares them with families. Reports describe what a student has shown in our classes. They are not an official school record or a report card.

12. Our website

The information on letcinstitute.ca is for general information about our programs. We work to keep it accurate and current, but it may change without notice.

When you send an inquiry or partnership form, you agree to give us accurate information. We use it to reply, as described in our Privacy Policy. Sending a form does not enrol a student or create a partnership.

Our website may link to other websites, such as Google Meet or the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for them.

13. Partner organizations

When a school or other organization enrols students with us, our agreement with that organization sets out the program, schedule, fees and who may see student information. If that agreement and these terms disagree, the agreement applies to that program. Partners are responsible for getting any permission they need from families to enrol students with LETC.

14. Our responsibilities and limits

We teach with reasonable care and skill, and we work to keep our website and learning platform available and secure. We cannot promise they will always be uninterrupted or error-free, and they may sometimes be unavailable for maintenance or because of problems outside our control, such as an internet or video platform outage.

To the extent the law allows:

  • our website, platform and materials are provided "as is," without promises beyond those in these terms
  • LETC is not liable for indirect or consequential losses, such as lost time or lost opportunities
  • our total liability to you for any claim about our services will not be more than the fees you paid us for the program the claim relates to

Nothing in these terms limits any right you have under Ontario or Canadian law that cannot be limited, or our responsibility for anything the law does not let us limit.

15. Suspending or ending access

You may stop using our services at any time. Tell us if a student will no longer take part, and we will close or delete the account when asked.

We may suspend or end a student's access to a class, the learning platform or the website if these terms are broken, or if needed to keep students and staff safe. Where we can, we will talk with the parent or guardian first and explain why. Sections that by their nature should continue after access ends, including section 10 and sections 14 and 16, continue to apply.

16. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada that apply there. If we cannot sort out a disagreement by talking, the courts of Ontario will decide it. We hope to resolve any concern directly with you first, so please contact us before taking any other step.

17. Changes to these terms and how to contact us

We will update these terms when our services or the law change, and post the new version with its effective date. For significant changes, we will email families before the changes take effect. If you keep using our services after the effective date, you agree to the updated terms.
